The Playful Body

This workshop will concentrate on partnering and floor work. We will learn to deal with our own weight and to use our skeletal structure to support our movements. We will learn some phrases and explore movements that originate out of necessity, urgency, limitation and emotion. To share and to communicate are essential aspects in our daily lives. We will create a frame where dance expresses these aspects through partnering and collective work. By working with other bodies, we will discover our own.

Svitlana Pashko

Sveta is a dance teacher, choreographer and performer. She is also a certified massage therapist and a modeling designer (polymer clay crafting) and was the organizer of the Kyiv International Festival of Contact Improvisation in 2009-2014.

In addition to having over 20 years of experience in various dance styles, academic (classical, folk dance, modern, modern jazz, contemporary, contact improvisation) and subcultural (hip-hop, salsa, strip plastic, tango), Sveta has worked with several dance groups and ballets in Kiev including the P. Virsky Ukrainian National Folk Dance Ensemble.

Having discovered contact improvisation in 2005, Sveta has since explored different approaches to movement such as Authentic Movement, Axis Syllabus, release technique, Body-Mind Centering®, hatha yoga, Acro-Yoga and Laban Movement Analysis.

Recycling in Movement

Recycling while moving enables dances that are economical, graceful and long-lasting. In this workshop, will look at some movement principles which help us to "do" less while dancing—to use only those parts of the body that are really needed to maintain position or motion, to let go of extra tension in the body/mind, and to learn to use other forces such as gravity.

Andrew Wass

By experimenting with aleatoric, improvisational, and indeterminate processes, Andrew Wass formalizes the coincidental and emphasizes the conscious processes of composition that are the generative source of much of his works. Influenced heavily by his undergraduate studies of Biochemistry at U.C. San Diego, Andrew works by creating a defined, almost crystalline palette in order to generate a myriad of possibilities. The possibilities are reduced and concentrated in the moments of execution and reception. He has performed in works by Nancy Stark Smith, Scott Wells, Jess Curtis and Nina Martin, among others. He has taught at festivals and universities in Japan, Germany, and throughout the United States.

A member of the Lower Left Performance Collective, he is a graduate of the MA program of Solo/Dance/Authorship at the Hochschulübergreifendes Zentrum für Tanz in Berlin.

3 in 2

These classes will look at the improvisation of contact through a variety of conceptual trios, such as center/floor/partner. By consciously and rigorously examining the triads, we achieve an un/conscious clarity within the chaos of the dance.

Questions and Answers

In this workshop, there will be a structure for participants to ask questions and provide answers within small groups. Please come with some questions about your own CI dancing that you would like to find answers to. Also come with a generous heart and be ready to provide constructive feedback, comments and suggestions to others who have questions of their own. Please bring a pen and some loose paper to write on (if you have).

sampradana (music)

sampradana is an artistic project always open to new music and movement explorations, sound textures and creative collaborations. Behind the name there is music producer, a DJ and a dancer. As a sound designer I collaborated on theatre projects (such as Rhinoceros, directed by Robert Wilson – under the name Daniel Dragoescu); as a DJ, sampradana has been featured in venues quite different in flavor: from contact improvisation festivals and gatherings (such as the Yantri SnowFest and jams within the Kiev CI community) to outdoor events like Abduction Beamz, to Ecstatic Dance sessions, to psytrance or techno parties.
